Video Production Team Supporting Frequent Field Shoots

Company Situation

The company operates an internal content production team within the media production industry. Their team includes producers and shooters who frequently go on location to capture footage using a variety of camera systems, ranging from professional cinema cameras to action cameras. The team is currently in a transitional phase moving from a hybrid remote/on-premises setup to a fully remote cloud-based workflow, driven by an impending office downsizing and infrastructure decommissioning.

Existing Workflow

Currently, the team offloads footage at their office to on-premises servers via LAN connections. Editors primarily work remotely from home, accessing and syncing footage stored on the central server using tools like Resilio Sync. Producers offload media directly to the server but do not use the sync tool. For review and approval, they rely on Frame.io, and project management is handled through Mount. Large file transfers are managed using Hightail, and editors remotely access on-premises editing machines through Parsec. Their camera equipment includes Sony FX6 and FX3, GoPros, Insta360s, and separate audio recording systems with LTC timecode synchronization.

Issues with the Existing Workflow

The imminent loss of their on-premises infrastructure, including servers and edit suites, presents a major challenge. Without the physical servers, Resilio Sync will no longer function, disrupting their ability to keep footage in sync between producers and editors. Continuing to courier drives or rely on sneaker net methods is not feasible. Additionally, switching from Frame.io for review and approval mid-project is impractical due to deep institutional knowledge and established workflows. The team needs a solution that supports real-time cloud-based editing and media management while maintaining compatibility with Frame.io for review processes.

How Shade Would Change Their Workflow

Shade offers a cloud-based media workflow platform that enables producers to offload footage directly to the cloud from any location and allows editors to work remotely on media stored entirely in the cloud. This eliminates the dependency on physical servers and sync tools like Resilio Sync. Shade’s platform supports real-time collaboration and keeps projects in sync throughout their lifecycle. Importantly, it integrates seamlessly with existing tools like Frame.io for review and approval, allowing the team to maintain their familiar processes without disruption during the transition.
