Education Company Consolidating Frame IO and LucidLink

Company Situation

The company is a private high school with approximately 1,300 students, focusing on media production education. Their team includes around 70 student users who require access to large media files for video editing, both on campus and remotely. The workflow involves multiple users accessing and collaborating on high-resolution video content, particularly using Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects.

Existing Workflow

The school experimented with solutions like Frame IO and LucidLink for file storage and collaboration. Frame IO provided useful feedback and review features but lacked robust offline access and seamless integration with editing software. LucidLink offered a streaming file system with remote mounting capabilities, aligning better with their needs but missing some usability features.

Issues with the Existing Workflow

Frame IO’s inability to handle offline access and direct integration with editing software disrupted workflow continuity. LucidLink, while offering real-time mounted storage, lacked an intuitive user interface for previewing and annotating files. Students and staff faced challenges collaborating efficiently across locations due to these limitations. Managing large video files (around 10 terabytes) while maintaining performance and ease of access was difficult.

How Shade Would Change Their Workflow

Shade combines the best features of both Frame IO and LucidLink by providing: - A cloud-based storage system with a desktop app that mounts remote files as if they were local drives, enabling editing directly within Premiere Pro, After Effects, and DaVinci Resolve without downloading entire files. - A user-friendly interface for scrubbing through video previews, marking up, annotating, and sharing files—streamlining collaboration and review processes. - AI-powered search capabilities to quickly locate specific content within large media libraries, aiding in media curation and management. - The ability for students and staff to upload files easily via shareable links, simplifying content collection. - Seamless synchronization of project files and exports, allowing multiple users to pick up work from any location, enhancing remote and on-campus workflows.

Benefits

  • Efficient remote and on-premises editing without full downloads of large video files.
  • Integrated review and annotation tools reduce reliance on multiple platforms.
  • AI search accelerates finding and organizing media assets.
  • Simplified file sharing and uploading fosters better collaboration.
  • Consistent project synchronization supports fluid teamwork between students and faculty.
