Version Control

Definition

Version Control is the practice of tracking and managing changes to files, documents, or creative assets over time. In creative operations, version control ensures that team members are always working with the most current version of a file, that previous versions are preserved and can be retrieved if needed, and that changes can be tracked and attributed to specific individuals. Version control is particularly important in collaborative creative projects where multiple people may be working on the same file simultaneously.

Contextual Usage

The creative director establishes a version control protocol for the team: "From now on, every file should be saved with a version number in the filename — V1, V2, V3, and so on. When you send a file to a client, always include the version number in the email. And when you start working on a new version, always save it as a new file rather than overwriting the previous version. This will prevent us from ever losing work." ---
