A Proxy is a lower-resolution, more compressed copy of a high-resolution video file, created specifically for use in the offline editing process. Working with proxy files allows editors to work faster and on less powerful hardware, as the files are smaller and easier for the computer to process. Proxy files are typically created by a digital imaging technician (DIT) or assistant editor and are linked to the original high-resolution files in the editing software, so that the project can be easily conformed back to the original files at any time.
The assistant editor sets up the project for the editor: "I've created 1080p ProRes proxies for all the 4K RAW camera files. The proxies are linked to the originals in the project, so when we're ready to conform, we just need to relink the media to the original files and the sequence will automatically update to the high-resolution versions."
