The Music Supervisor is the creative and legal professional responsible for selecting, securing the rights to, and licensing pre-existing (or "needle-drop") songs for use in a film, television show, or commercial. They work with the director to find songs that fit the creative vision and the budget, negotiate the synchronization and master use licenses with the record labels and publishers, and ensure that all the necessary legal paperwork is in order before the final mix.
The director asks the Music Supervisor for options: "I really want to use that classic 70s rock song for the montage sequence, but the budget is too tight. Can you find me three or four alternative tracks from emerging artists that have the same driving energy and vintage feel, but that we can actually afford to license?"
