Location Scout

Definition

A Location Scout is the process of finding and evaluating potential filming locations that match the requirements of the script. The Location Scout (or Location Manager) visits potential sites, photographs them, assesses their logistical suitability (parking, power access, noise levels, permit requirements), and negotiates with property owners for filming rights. The director and DP will typically conduct a "tech scout" of the shortlisted locations to assess them from a creative and technical standpoint.

Contextual Usage

The production manager reports to the director, "The location scout found three potential options for the warehouse scene. I've sent you the photos. The one in the industrial district is the most photogenic, but it will require a generator because there isn't enough power on site."
