Grip
Definition
Grips are the crew members responsible for building and maintaining all the equipment used to support and move the camera, as well as managing non-electrical lighting support equipment (like flags, silks, and diffusion frames). The grip department works closely with both the camera department and the electrical department. The Key Grip is the head of the department, and the Best Boy Grip is their first assistant. Specific types of grips include the Dolly Grip (who operates the camera dolly) and the Crane Operator.
Contextual Usage
The DP asks the Key Grip, "Can you rig a flag on a C-stand to cut the light from that window off the back wall? I want to keep the light on the actor's face but prevent it from spilling onto the background."
