Definition
A Foley Artist is the skilled craftsperson who creates and performs the Foley sound effects for a film or video production. Working in a specialized Foley studio, the Foley Artist watches the picture on a screen and uses a wide variety of props and surfaces to recreate sounds in synchronization with the action on screen. The craft requires a combination of physical skill, creativity, and a deep understanding of how sounds are perceived by the audience. Foley Artists specialize in different types of sounds — some are known for their footstep work, others for their prop handling or clothing movement.

The Foley Artist reviews the spotting notes for the film: "I have three days of Foley recording scheduled. Day one will be entirely footsteps — there are a lot of different surfaces in this film, and the footstep work needs to be very precise. Day two will be prop handling and clothing movement.
