Dolly Grip

Definition

The Dolly Grip is the specialized grip responsible for operating the camera dolly and laying the dolly track. This is a highly skilled role requiring a precise understanding of camera movement, timing, and physical coordination. The Dolly Grip must execute smooth, consistent camera moves that match the action of the actors and the intentions of the director and DP, often repeating the same move identically across multiple takes.

Contextual Usage

After a take in which the dolly move felt slightly jerky, the DP asks the Dolly Grip, "Can we try that again? I want the move to feel like it's floating — completely imperceptible. Let's try it a little slower this time."
