Dailies / Rushes (Lingo)

Definition

Dailies (or "Rushes") refer to the raw, unedited footage shot during a single day of production. In the era of film, this footage was processed overnight and viewed the next day by the director, DP, and producers to ensure the material was captured correctly. In modern digital workflows, dailies are typically processed by the DIT or Assistant Editor, synced with the production audio, and uploaded to a secure platform for review. Reviewing dailies is a critical step in verifying the technical quality and creative direction of the shoot.

Contextual Usage

The director reviews the footage with the DP on set: "The dailies from yesterday look fantastic. The lighting on the wide shot is exactly what we discussed. But I noticed a slight focus issue on the close-up of the lead actor in take 3. Let's make sure we get a clean take of that setup today."
