Compositing

Definition

Compositing is the process of combining multiple visual elements from different sources into a single, seamless image. In modern filmmaking, compositing typically involves combining live-action footage with computer-generated imagery (CGI), matte paintings, and other visual elements. The goal is to create images that appear to have been captured in camera, even though the individual elements were created separately. Compositing is performed by VFX artists using software such as Nuke, After Effects, or Fusion.

Contextual Usage

The VFX producer reviews the compositing work on a complex shot: "The CGI spaceship looks great in isolation, but the compositing into the live-action plate isn't convincing yet. The color temperature of the ship doesn't match the plate, and the shadow it's casting on the ground is too sharp. Let's go back and refine the integration."
