A Change Request (CR) is a formal document used to propose and authorize a change to the scope, timeline, or budget of a project. In creative projects, change requests are used to manage scope creep — when a client requests additional work that was not included in the original brief. A formal change request process ensures that all changes are properly documented, their impact on the project is assessed, and they are approved by the appropriate stakeholders before work begins.
The account manager sends a Change Request to the client: "Following your request to add a 60-second version of the TV spot to the deliverables, I'm sending you a formal Change Request. The additional work will require one additional day of editing and one additional day of sound mixing, at a total additional cost of $8,500. The delivery date will also need to be extended by three business days. Please sign and return the Change Request to authorize the additional work."
