Brand Guidelines

Definition

Brand Guidelines (also called a "brand style guide" or "brand book") are a comprehensive set of rules and standards that define how a brand should be presented to the world, both visually and verbally. They typically cover the correct use of the brand's logo (including size, placement, and clear space), the brand's color palette (with specific Pantone, CMYK, RGB, and hex values), the approved typography (fonts, sizes, and weights), the imagery style (photography and illustration guidelines), and the brand's tone of voice (the personality and style of the brand's written communication). Brand guidelines ensure consistency across all marketing materials and channels.

Contextual Usage

A new freelance designer is onboarded to work on a campaign. The creative director sends them the brand guidelines with the note: "Please read through these carefully before you start designing. The brand is very particular about the use of the logo — it should never be placed on a background that doesn't provide sufficient contrast, and it should never be stretched, rotated, or recolored. If you have any questions about the guidelines, please ask before you start."
