Audio Sweetening

Definition

Audio Sweetening is the process of enhancing and polishing the audio tracks of a film or video production in post-production. It encompasses a range of processes including noise reduction, equalization, compression, de-essing, reverb, and other audio processing techniques designed to make the audio sound cleaner, more natural, and more emotionally effective. Audio sweetening is typically performed by the re-recording mixer or a dedicated audio post-production engineer as part of the final mix process.

Contextual Usage

The re-recording mixer reviews the dialogue tracks before the final mix: "There's a lot of room noise in the dialogue from the warehouse scene — I can hear the echo of the space on every line. I'm going to do some audio sweetening to reduce the reverb and tighten up the dialogue before we go into the final mix. I'll also use some noise reduction to clean up the low-frequency rumble from the HVAC system."
