While the Production Designer is responsible for the overall creative vision of the production design, the Art Director manages the day-to-day operations of the art department — supervising the set designers, draftspeople, and construction crews, managing the art department budget, and ensuring that the sets and locations are built and dressed to the Production Designer's specifications.
The Production Designer briefs the Art Director on the new set: "I need the protagonist's office to feel like it belongs to someone who is meticulous and controlled — everything perfectly ordered, no personal items, very minimal. Can you work with the set decorator to make sure the dressing reflects that character? I want to see the set dressed and ready for the director's walkthrough by Thursday."
