AAF (Advanced Authoring Format)

Definition

Advanced Authoring Format (AAF) is a professional file interchange format used to transfer editing projects between different non-linear editing systems and post-production applications. An AAF file contains not just the edit decision information (like an EDL) but also the actual media files, metadata, effects information, and other project data. AAF is widely used to transfer projects between Avid Media Composer (the industry standard for film and television editing) and Pro Tools (the industry standard for audio post-production), allowing the sound team to receive the full edit with all its metadata intact.

Contextual Usage

The assistant editor prepares the handoff to the sound department: "I'm exporting an AAF from Avid for the sound team. The AAF will include all the dialogue tracks, the temp music, and the temp sound effects, along with all the metadata and the picture reference. This will allow the Pro Tools operator to import the entire edit into their session without having to manually rebuild the sequence."
